Hirosaki Castle tower raised off foundation to reconstruct stone walls

People watch on Aug. 16, 2015 the first such operation in 100 years to raise the three-story tower of Hirosaki Castle in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, off its foundation for repairs. The 14.4-meter high, 400-ton castle tower was raised 10 centimeters off its foundation by 27 hydraulic jacks, and will now be moved on carriages 70 meters by rail to allow its stone wall foundation to be reconstructed.
