Hunt for rare freshwater fish to begin in Japan's deepest lake
Photo taken on Aug. 4, 2015, shows Japan's deepest lake, Lake Tazawa, in Semboku, Akita Prefecture, northern Japan. Researchers plan to start a large-scale survey there in September using an underwater camera. Hopes are rising of finding the endangered "kunimasu" freshwater salmon species indigenous to the lake that was thought to have been extinct until it was found in Lake Saiko in Yamanashi Prefecture, central Japan, in 2010.
