People pray for souls of forlorn dead at Kyoto temple
People pray at Adashino-Nenbutu-ji, a temple in Kyoto, western Japan, on Aug. 23, 2015, for the repose of those who died without any surviving relatives to tend their graves. The temple is known for thousands of stone Buddhist images symbolizing such forlorn dead. Candles were lit by visitors as part of the annual "sento kuyo" (memorial for thousand lights) service.
