Beijing issues first-ever highest smog warning
Visitors to Tiananmen Square in Beijing on Dec. 8, 2015, wear masks after city authorities for the first time issued the highest level red alert for air pollution, issued when severe smog is expected to last for more than 72 hours. The red alert required most schools in the capital to close and restricted traffic, banning cars with odd and even number plates, respectively, from driving on alternate days. (Kyodo)
