Award-winning alpinist Taniguchi dies after going missing on snowy mountain
Photo taken in September 2001 shows Japanese alpinist Kei Taniguchi, the first woman to win the prestigious Piolet d'Or (Golden Ice Axe) mountaineering award in 2009. Taniguchi was confirmed dead in a hospital on Dec. 22, 2015, after going missing a day earlier near a peak of the snowy Daisetsuzan volcanic group in Hokkaido, northern Japan. (Kyodo)
