Annual ice festival opens in northeast China
A crowd watches swimmers diving into a hole dug in an ice-covered river in the northeastern Chinese city of Harbin on Jan. 5, 2016, during a swimming competition. The event was held before the city's annual ice and snow festival beginning later in the day. The festival, which started in 1985, attracts many visitors for its ice sculptures and illuminations despite the harsh conditions, with temperatures falling close to minus 20 C. (Kyodo)
