Kobe marks 21 years since Great Hanshin Earthquake
Candles in thousands of bamboo lanterns are placed to form "1.17" and "mirai" (future) in kanji characters at a park in Kobe, western Japan, on Jan. 17, 2016, the 21th anniversary of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake. The quake devastated the port city and its vicinity, claiming the lives of 6,434 people. (Kyodo)
