Japan abandons bid for World Heritage listing of Christian sites
File photo taken in September 2013 shows the Sakitsu community in Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture, where Christians practiced their faith despite a centuries-long ban from the 17th century. The community is one of the 14 churches and other Christian sites in southwestern Japan that the government had sought to list as World Heritage sites. Japan decided on Feb. 9. 2016, to withdraw the request at the urging of a UNESCO panel. (Kyodo)
