Palmyra ruins in Syria after ISIS's withdrawal
Photo taken April 20, 2016, shows graffiti saying in Arabic, "Abu Yaseen was here," on the Roman Theater, which escaped destruction by the Islamic State extremist group, in the ruins of Palmyra, a world heritage site in central Syria. The group controlled the historic city for 10 months until March 2016, and in that time the militants destroyed some of the ruins' monuments, including the Arch of Triumph and the main sanctuary inside the Temple of Bel.
