Town grapples with depopulation in shadow of G-7 summit
Kiyokazu Yamagiwa, who lives in the western Japan town of Daiochofunakoshi, located just a 20-minute drive from the site of the Group of Seven summit taking place in Shima, Mie Prefecture, in late May, stands near the harbor on April 30, 2016. The 83-year-old man said, "There are about 700 houses, but nearly half of them are abandoned," as the local community grapples with depopulation. (Kyodo)
