Water-discharge drill at Shirakawa-go in central Japan
Columns of water reaching up to 30 meters high are discharged over traditional "gassho-zukuri" farmhouses during an annual water-discharge drill in the village of Shirakawa in the central Japan prefecture of Gifu on Nov. 6, 2016. The drill is aimed at preparing for a fire at the wooden farmhouses with steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snow in winter in the Shirakawa-go area, designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
