Casino bill clears lower house
A plenary session of Japan's lower house approves a bill on Dec. 6, 2016 to legalize casino gambling, paving the way to enact it by the end of the current Diet session on Dec. 14. The empty seats were vacated some opposition lawmakers who walked out in protest before the vote. Concern remains that the bill, if enacted, could worsen the problem of gambling addiction and other social ills. (Kyodo)
