Japanese Christian warlord Takayama Ukon beatified
About 10,000 Catholics and other people from Japan and abroad attend a beatification ceremony for Takayama Ukon, a Japanese Christian warlord, in Osaka, western Japan, on Feb. 7, 2017. Vatican officially endorsed Ukon, who served as a warrior and was exiled to Manila in 1614 due to the Edo Shogunate's ban on Christianity, as "beatus," or "blessed," the stage below a saint. (Kyodo)
