Japan gov't ordered to pay record damages in U.S. base noise suit

People in Okinawa stage a rally near the Okinawa branch of the Naha District Court (back) on Feb. 23, 2017, before the court's ruling on a damages suit filed by about 22,000 local residents near the U.S. Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture against the Japanese government over noise from the military installation. The court ordered the government later in the day to pay about 30.2 billion yen ($267 million) but turned down a request from the residents to ban nighttime and early morning flights at the air base.
