6th anniversary of 2011 earthquake and tsunami
Levees are almost complete on the coast of the northeastern Japan city of Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, on March 9, 2017, almost six years after the area was devastated by a massive tsunami following a magnitude 9.0-earthquake. A pine tree -- known as the "miracle pine" for being a single spindly survivor among a grove of 70,000 trees that had lined the city's beach for centuries -- can be seen in this photo taken with a drone.
