Fukushima village begins sowing rice for 1st time since nuclear crisis
Farmers in Iitate village, Fukushima prefecture plant rice seedlings on May 10, 2017, in expectation of selling the grain in the fall after it passes radiation screenings. That would make it the first rice crop sold commercially since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster in March 2011, as evacuation orders were lifted at the end of March for large parts of the village located close to the nuclear complex. Electric fences to prevent wild boars from entering the paddy fields are visible in the foreground. (Kyodo)
