Emperor abdication bill clears lower house panel
Members of the House of Representatives' steering committee stand to show their approval for a bill to allow Emperor Akihito to relinquish the Chrysanthemum throne at the Diet in Tokyo on June 1, 2017, paving the way for its passage in parliament next week. If realized, it would be Japan's first abdication in roughly 200 years. (Kyodo)
