Memorial service on Shumshu Island
Photo taken July 19, 2017, shows a helmet of a Japanese soldier left behind on Shumshu Island, at the northeastern end of the Kurils, where a fierce battle took place between Japan and the-then Soviet Union shortly after Japan's surrender in World War II. Some 20 people from Japan visited on the same day to hold a memorial service for the Japanese soldiers who died. (Kyodo)
