Ex-islanders return home after visiting ancestors' graves
Former residents of disputed islands off Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido return to Nemuro on Sept. 1, 2017, after visiting their ancestors' graves on the Habomai islet group. The islands -- called the Southern Kurils in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan -- were seized by the Soviet Union in 1945 when Japan surrendered to end World War II. (Kyodo)
