Japanese former residents make 1st trip by air to Russian-held isles
Japanese former residents of a group of Russian-controlled islands off Hokkaido board a chartered aircraft at Nakashibetsu airport in Hokkaido on Sept. 23, 2017, in the first such air trip negotiated during a decades-long territorial spat. The group of 68 people will visit their ancestors' graves on two of the disputed isles, collectively called the Northern Territories in Japan and the Southern Kurils in Russia. (Kyodo)
