23rd anniversary of Great Hanshin Earthquake
People pray for victims of the Great Hanshin Earthquake 23 years ago on Jan. 17, 2018, in front of a gaslight set up in Rikuzentakata, an Iwate Prefecture city devastated by the March 2011 disaster that hit northeastern Japan, in memory of its victims. The Hanshin quake damaged the western port city of Kobe and the surrounding areas, killing more than 6,000 people. (Kyodo)
