Native speakers in demand as Japanese schools step up English lessons
Yuko Shigematsu (L) takes a lesson at an English language school in Oita, southwestern Japan, on Feb. 3, 2018. Shigematsu is one of many elementary school teachers in Japan who are turning to English with native speakers as they seek to gain confidence teaching the language before it is formally added to their school curriculums in the academic year starting in April 2020.
