Ethnic Ainu minority recognized as indigenous people
Ainu people celebrate after legislation aimed at protecting and promoting their culture is enacted following its passage through the House of Councillors in Tokyo on April 19, 2019. The law stipulates for the first time the Ainu, an ethnic minority in northern Japan, are an "indigenous" people.(Kyodo)
