Whale meat for school lunch
Students eat whale meat at Wakaura Elementary School in Wakayama on July 3, 2019, under the school lunch program that began in fiscal 2017 in the western Japan prefecture hosting a well-known whaling town.
Earlier in the day the students learned about the ecology of whales and whaling history in Japan from an official of the Tokyo-based Institute of Cetacean Research, who visited the school as part of its efforts to deepen people's understanding of whaling following Japan's resumption of commercial whaling on July 1.
