Documents of former chief aide to Emperor Hirohito

Photo taken Aug. 19, 2019, in Tokyo shows the Japanese word for "regret" (center in 2nd line from L) in a journal written by Michiji Tajima, who headed Japan's imperial household office from 1948 to 1953. The journal entry, dated Feb. 20, 1952, shows that Emperor Hirohito, posthumously known as Emperor Showa, wanted to express regret and remorse over World War II in a speech in 1952 but was stopped from doing so by then Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida.
