Preparation for imperial succession ritual
Officials at Yamasakiimbe shrine in Yoshinogawa, Tokushima Prefecture, western Japan, carry a box containing hemp twine on Sept. 2, 2019. The twine will be made into fabric that will be used in the Great Thanksgiving Ceremony, known as the Daijosai, a key imperial succession rite to be performed by Japanese Emperor Naruhito in mid-November.
