Japan's 2nd qtr GDP shrinks at record 27.8% amid virus pandemic

Japan's economy in the April-June quarter shrank an annualized real 27.8 percent from the previous quarter, the sharpest contraction on record, as economic activity was restricted under a state of emergency during the virus outbreak.

Moss Food Service's experiment to introduce "Slow Cash Register" using Orihime

On April 21, Moss Food Service disclosed to the press an experiment to introduce a "slow cash register" using Orihime (photo), an alter ego robot from ORIY Laboratory (Minato-ku, Tokyo), at the Moss Burger Osaki store (Shinagawa-ku) from April 27. While conversing with customers, the operators move Orihime with their personal computers or smart phones and also input orders. The order is transferred to the store via the Internet and the order is completed. The operator, Hiroto Takehisa, 19, a resident of Osaka Prefecture, said, "The operation is not difficult. I will have fun while doing it. The experiment will run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays until the end of August. Based on the results of this experiment, Moss Food Service plans to conduct other experiments within fiscal 2020, including drive-through order handling and meal delivery operations using self-propelled robots. Moss Food Service's experiment to introduce "Slow Cash Register" using Orihime

On April 21, Moss Food Service disclosed to the press an experiment to introduce a "slow cash register" using Orihime (photo), an alter ego robot from ORIY Laboratory (Minato-ku, Tokyo), at the Moss Burger Osaki store (Shinagawa-ku) from April 27. In the experiment, two physically challenged people living in the Kansai region will operate and handle the robot. While conversing with customers, the operators move Orihime with their personal computers or smart phones and also input orders. The experiment will run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays until the end of August. Universal Studios Japan accepts visitors across nation

Body temperature checks are carried out for visitors at the entrance of Universal Studios Japan in Osaka on July 20, 2020, when the theme park resumed accepting visitors from across Japan. The park reopened in early June by limiting guests to yearly pass holders and those living nearby after a three month coronavirus-necessitated closure and has been gradually easing such location-based entry restrictions.

On April 15, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike requested the cooperation of Tokyo residents and businesses in accordance with the Act on Special Measures against the New Coronavirus, after an expert panel raised the status of the new coronavirus infection in Tokyo to the most serious of four evaluation levels. He said he would not issue a request for the closure of businesses at this time, but would request the government to establish penalties for businesses that do not respond to requests for closure under the special measures law. As for the government's "GoTo Travel" tourism promotion plan, which is scheduled to be launched on March 22, he said, "In light of the current infection situation, I hope (the government) will carefully reconsider the timing and method of implementation.
