Japanese POWs in Soviet and Mongolia
People head to a memorial gathering at the Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery in Tokyo on Aug. 23, 2020, for Japanese soldiers who died while interned to work in labor camps in the Soviet Union and Mongolia as POWs following the end of World War II. About 55,000 of the roughly 575,000 Japanese who were held by the Soviet Union as POWs died in captivity, according to a Japanese labor ministry estimate.
