Visits Russian President

Russian President Yeltsin, who came to Japan as a state guest on the evening of October 11, attended a welcome ceremony at the State Guest House on the morning of October 12. President Yeltsin visited Japan in July for talks with the leaders of the seven industrialized nations, but this was his first official visit to Japan. It was also his first official visit to Japan, and an unusual visit to a foreign country in the midst of the state of emergency declared after the armed crackdown on anti-presidential protesters. The Emperor of Japan led a military review after shaking hands with members of the Imperial Family and Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa and his wife. After the summit, the two leaders signed and announced the Tokyo Declaration, which outlines the basic policy of Japan-Russia relations in the future, and the Economic Declaration.
