Fireworks in tsunami-hit Rikuzentakata
Fireworks are set off in
Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture on Oct. 31, 2020, to encourage people in the northeastern Japan city severely battered by the March 2011 earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. Seen in the lower part of the picture is the famed "miracle pine," regarded as a symbol of hope in the process of the region's recovery from the disaster as it survived the deadly tsunami that swept away a forest of 70,000 pines.
