Renewal of Marian column starts in Prague centre
Academic sculptor Petr Vana and his aides started the renewal of the Column of Virgin Mary, a copy of the original 17th-century baroque sculpture destroyed by a mob in 1918, in Old Town Square in Prague's centre, but had to interrupt the works today, on Wednesday, May 29, 2019. Vana and his team removed the cobblestones revealing a plaque commemorating the original column location. Archaeologists are reportedly to participate in the works. The seven-square-metre building site was fenced. The column has a valid building permit that will expire soon, which made the team start working, Vana told a CTK reporter. However, he has not arranged the necessary permission to occupy the site, and thus he committed a misdemeanour. This is why the team has to return the site into the original shape by 18:00. Vana said he would do so and get the necessary permits later. (CTK Photo/Michal Kamaryt)
