Southwestern Japan islands set to become World Heritage site

An Okinawa rail, a species of bird endemic to Japan's Okinawa Island, is pictured at a facility in Kunigami, a village in the northern part of the island, on May 11, 2021. A UNESCO advisory panel recommended the previous day that a chain of islands in southwestern Japan with dense subtropical forests, including the northern part of Okinawa Island, be added to the list of natural World Heritage sites.
