Yatobashi spanning the south edge of Kaigan dori was rebuilt using steel in 1887. The pillar of the guard house where guards checked the entrance and exit of people within the settlement can been seen to the left.                     The Oura and Sagarimatsu neighbourhoods of the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement are seen on the right and left, respectively, from the hillside to the south of Higashiyamate. The houses stand in an organized pattern at Sagarimatsu. The photograph reveals the juxtaposition of the settlement and Japanese neighborhoods.
