Nogeyama was a residential area for Yokohama merchants. The two greatest silk traders, Hara Zenzaburo and Mogi Sobe built magnificent residences there. After the Great Kanto Earthquake, the area became Nogeyama Park.       The south garden of the Namikawa Yasuyuki residence at Sanjo Shirakawa Bridge-agaru is viewed from inside. Mr. Namikawa and a woman with a fan are sitting together on a veranda beside the Japanese kaiyushiki garden designed by Ogawa Jihei. Another woman, possibly a maid, is standing behind the woman, holding a small basket in her left hand. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.           The cedars along Nikko Highway were donated by Matsudaira Masatsuna on the 33rd anniversary of the death of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The building visible in the background probably stands near Oiwake Jizo. This area was beautiful at the time. The sky is visible between the trees.               Stereograph depicting rickshaws on the Gojo-zaka slope surrounded by bamboo groves. The two women, one with a parasol, are passengers on the rickshaw pulled by the man with an amigasa hat. Bamboo fencing made of bamboo grass tied to bamboo poles prevents the bamboo from encroaching upon the path. Taken prior to 1909, when the slope was expanded to a width of 7.2 meters.                 Cherry trees at Mukojima

                The area across Sumida River from Asakusa is Mukojima. There is no official boundary, but area from Mokuboji Temple to Makura Bridge is referred to as Mukojima. The banks of Sumida River at Mukojima are called Sumida-tei or Boku-tei. Cherry trees were planted here during the Kyoho Period (1716-36) by the 8th Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, and saplings were planted from time to time thereafter. This area thus became the most popular place to enjoy cherry blossoms in Edo.
