          An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.                   The Rokudo Jizo are typical examples of stone Buddhist statues in Hakone together with the Magai botoke of Nijugobosatsu. It was carved on a rock facing Shojin Lake at the foot of the Mt. Kamifutagoyama, and has a height of over 4 meters. It was completed in 1300, and the Buddhist ceremony to consecrate a newly made image was conducted by Ryokan Boninjo.                     The Great Buddha was located on a hill to the left of Ueno Seiyoken Restaurant and attracted many visitors during the cherry blossom season. However, the head of the Buddha fell off in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The body was donated to the military to make (of all things) weapons during World War II. On the 50th anniversary of the earthquake, a pagoda was built at the site of the former Great Buddha, and the head of the Buddha, which had been kept at Kaneiji Temple, was installed in a monument south of the pagoda.
