The Niomon Gate,Taiyuin Shrine,Nikko

The front gate of Daiyuin, which enshrines the tomb of the Shogun Iemitsu, is called Niomon because a pair of Kongo Rikishi statues are placed in it. It resembles the front gate of Toshogu, with an eight-legged and red-painted gate, but it is done in Buddhist style rather than in a mixture of Shinto and Buddhist styles as in Toshogu.         OTSU, Japan - The Nara National Museum says Aug. 3 it has found inside a principal statue at Ishiyama Temple in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, four small Buddha statues overlaid with gold. They were made between the seventh and eighth centuries, covering Japan's Asuka, Hakuho and Nara periods. One of the four (far R) is judged to have been made in the Asuka era and is believed to be one of the oldest Buddha statues made in Japan, together with those at Asuka Temple and Horyuji Temple.

          Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident). Bullet holes and sword marks still remain in the study and the entrance of the temple.             This stereograph bears the caption View taken from the United States Legation, at Yedo and is said to depict Tempukuji Temple in Azabu, but this is incorrect. The temple is actually Tozenji, located in present-day Takanawa 3-chome. The Shogunate concluded a treaty pact with Great Britain (Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Commerce) in 1858, and Tozenji Temple was designated as the site of the British Legation. This was taken by Swiss Pierre Rossier at the end of the Edo Period.               Female pilgrims climb the stone steps to Kondo Hall at Nin'naji Temple. The photograph was taken facing east from the eastern approach to Kan'nondo Hall. The women wear zori slippers, hold long walking sticks, and carry something on their backs. The irimoya-style building in the rear may be a place for drinking water. These temple schools were instrumental in the spread of modern education.
