    This is a magnificient view of the famous Zaimoku Island, an interesting geological arch formed by erosion. The layered sedimentary rock of this island teaches us much about the origins of Matsushima Bay. Unfortunately, the arch was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1969.       This photo captures Matsushima Beach as seen from Kyogashima Island. The Kanrantei Teahouse in the Momohama Period (late 16th century) architecture style, a Designated Cultural Asset of Miyagi Prefecture, is visible in the distance, just to the left side of the island. The boat is a chabune with full sail.             Nakanodake Shrine is located at the south foot of Mt. Kondo (also called Nakanodake). The deities worshipped are Nihon Buson in the Hongu and Okuninushinomikoto in the Zengu.               Kinkakuji Temple

              The Golden Pavilion at Rokuon-ji Temple seen from the eastern edge of Kyoko Pond, facing west-northwest. The rock on the left is Hosokawa-ishi, and Ashihara Island is visible behind. The temple was built in 1398 but destroyed by arson in 1950. Unlike the reconstructed building of today, the original roof was supported by many columns at each level. Water weeds fill the surface of the pond. Pine forest surrounds the area. The background is unclear due to the poor colouration.                 The red-painted bridge over the Daiya River is located at the entrance of Nikko Shaji. The stone girders of Shinkyo Bridge which were destroyed in the flooding of 1902 had joints as seen in the left of the photo.                       This is a scene of the Sakurababa and Irabayashi neighbourhoods near the fork of Nakashima River and Narutaki River (present-day Nakanohashi bridge). This scenery was given the poetic name Sakuraba Seiran (cherry blossom storm) and was known as one of the eight best scenes of Nagasaki.
