A deformed rock in Matsushima Bay

This is a magnificient view of the famous Zaimoku Island, an interesting geological arch formed by erosion. The layered sedimentary rock of this island teaches us much about the origins of Matsushima Bay. Unfortunately, the arch was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1969. This may be the Kosurugi Shinto Shrine at Kosurugi Point. It is the guardian of Koshigoe village. The old name was Hachioji gu, and Sasaki Moritsuna organized a campaign to raise funds for building the shrine. Byobu torii gate at the approach to hakone shrine

This torii does not stand at present, only a monument next to a petrol station. But it was probably famous during the Meiji era, and many photos remain of this scene. A procession of mountain palanquins and umbrellas is seen, some of the people looking like soldiers. Nakanodake shrine in myogisan

Nakanodake Shrine is located at the south foot of Mt. Kondo (also called Nakanodake). The deities worshipped are Nihon Buson in the Hongu and Okuninushinomikoto in the Zengu. Rokudo jizo,stone statue of the guardian deity

The Rokudo Jizo are typical examples of stone Buddhist statues in Hakone together with the Magai botoke of Nijugobosatsu. It was carved on a rock facing Shojin Lake at the foot of the Mt. Kamifutagoyama, and has a height of over 4 meters. It was completed in 1300, and the Buddhist ceremony to consecrate a newly made image was conducted by Ryokan Boninjo. The main approach to Toshogu Shrine,Nikko

The Omote-sando approach to Nikko Toshogu is viewed from Nakayama Street. The ditch in the centre no longer exists. At the end of the approach is Toshogu. The stone torii and Omotemon (Niomon) can be seen in the cedar grove. The Hyakumonozoroe Sennin Gyoretsu (1,000 Samurai Procession Festival) passes along this approach. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine

Labeled L17 HACHIMAN(B), the photograph depicts the Jogu Romon (upper shrine gate). The tablet on the gate reads Hachiman-gu.
