Kinkakuji in the Kita district of Kyoto city. A view of Kinkakuji Temple with the three-story building reflected on the surface of the Kyoko Pond. The first floor is done in shinden zukuri (Fujiwara palace style), the second is in Shoin zukuri (drawing-room style) and the third floor where the Buddha is enshrined is in Chinese style. The second and third floors are covered in gold, and thus the name of Kinkaku (Golden Pavilion).           The Golden Pavilion at Rokuon-ji Temple seen from the eastern edge of Kyoko Pond, facing west-northwest. The rock on the left is Hosokawa-ishi, and Ashihara Island is visible behind. The temple was built in 1398 but destroyed by arson in 1950. Unlike the reconstructed building of today, the original roof was supported by many columns at each level. Water weeds fill the surface of the pond. Pine forest surrounds the area. The background is unclear due to the poor colouration.               Northern view of Oike Pond Garden and Otsune Palace from Keyaki Bridge, looking over Nakashima Island in the Garden. The stone bridge on the right leads to the northern island. Pines and firs grow in front of the palace. Oike Garden was built during the Enpo Period (1673-81). This type of garden, called kaiyushiki, had bridges, lanterns, and small pavilions to enhance enjoyment of the beauty of the garden. Otsune Palace is built in the shoin-zukuri style and was rebuilt in 1855. The fallen leaves in the South Garden suggest winter. The balcony was renovated in 1633. The yosemune style building is roofed entirely with hinoki tree bark. Wings flank the west side and the east and west of the south side. The wooden fencing inside the railing is to prevent people from falling.
