A Shiro is a paddy for planting rice seedlings. An ideal shiro is soft and flat. To crack the soil in the paddy and make it flat is called shirokaki . This is usually done in three stages: arashiro , nakashiro and ueshiro .               The caldera area of Aso has been used to grow rice since the Yayoi Period. According to myth, the deity of the volcano, Takeiwawatatsunomikoto, built the first rice paddy here. The photograph captures the Asodani area with the central crater located on the north side of Aso Gogaku (the five mountains of Aso) as viewed from the east. The area is commonly referred to as Aso no Senmaida ( Thousand fields of Aso ) with many narrow rice paddies one after another.                 A farmer is cultivating the field using black-haired cow at a rice paddie in Uji. A rope and a plow are tied to the back of the cow and each time the cow pulls the plow, the rice paddie is cultivated. A big warehouse is behind and a small shack covered with mats is made temporarily next to it, and a farmer with a balance pole is carrying goods. The rice seedlings may be preserved in the shack.
