Post town

The shukuba (post-town) goes back to the Taika Reformation of 645. It developed significantly during the Edo era, and many shukuba towns were formed, such as the Gojusan-tsugi (53 Shukuba) of Tokaido and Rokujunana-tsugi (67 Shukuba) of Nakasendo. A certain number of people and horses were prepared for use by the Shogunate, and transport workers to provide convenience to general travelers also assembled in these towns.     Mt. Asama (2568m) as seen from the post town of Kutsukake, one of the three post towns of Asama-Negoshi. The Nakasendo Highway passes the southern foot of the mountain. It was after the opening of the first road built as part of the Seven Route Construction Project of Nagano Prefecture in 1883 that carriage traffic appeared. The stream is Yukawa.       This is the post town of Hakone viewed from Mishima-cho when facing Odawara-cho. Since the telegraph pole placed between Tokyo and Nagasaki in 1873 is visible, and the Hakone Imperial Villa at Dogashima by Lake Ashinoko in 1886 cannot be seen, this photo is assumed to have been taken between those periods. But the width of the road is too wide for Hakonejuku,, and a pine boulevard is seen, but the deity of Hakone Shrine is said to have eyes pierced with pine, and so people avoided planting pine trees there.             The Kamakura Highway (Misakaji) connecting the Kofu Basin in the south with Shizuoka is an old road dating back to ancient times. This photograph depicts the village of Fujinoki (present-day Misaka-machi, Fuefuki, Yamanashi Prefecture). Fujinoki was a tenma-shuku (a post town where travelers changed horses) on the Kofu Basin side, leading to the Misaka Pass of the Kamakura Highway. Misaka Pass is in the left background, viewed looking south from the Kofu Basin side.                   View of Tokyo from the northern edge of the Shinagawa Shuku (post town), where inns and rest stops for horses were located. The hill on the left indicates that this photograph was taken from around present-day Yatsuyama Bridge. The street in the foreground is probably the Tokaido Highway. This was taken by Felix Beato before train tracks were laid along the sea following land reclamation. Although Shinagawa Station was originally planned near Shinagawa Shuku, the local people were against the plan and eventually the station was built further north than originally planned.
