Written March 1866 by Beato. This is the Oura International Cemetery in Kawakami-machi built by agreement between the British consul and Japanese officials in 1861. It was closed in 1888.           This is a view from the cemetery at Fukusaiji Temple looking over central Nagasaki and the waterfront area from Daikoku-machi to Dejima. The re-routing of Nakashima River had not been completed at this time, so the date is between 1877 and 1887. Also, the construction of the new Urakami Road along the waterfront from Dejima to Goto-machi has not been completed yet. A cannon platform is visible near the edge of the pine tree.             Shimoda is known as a port opened to foreigners at the end of the Edo era. The Shogunate appointed a Shimoda Bugyo (magistrate) there in 1853, when the US fleet came to Uraga and demanded that ports be opened for trade. The Shogunate ordered them to enter Shimoda Harbour. It was also here that Perry landed in 1854. Shimoda was blessed with the features of a good natural harbor.               This is a view of Togitsu Village in Nishisonogi County adjacent to Omura Bay and Togitsu Harbour. The heavily populated Urago district is in the foreground, while on the opposite shore is the beach line of Sakino and its houses. This harbour was often used by people travelling to and from Omura. The hilly area in the background includes the villages of Okago and Urerigo. The tall mountain in the background is Mt.
