Akasakamon gate

One of the castle gates and approach to Edo Castle. Kuroda built the square shape in 1636, and the gate was restored by Kato and Ogawa in 1639. The description in Edo Meisho says: This gate has a good view of the Big Dipper, so it is an excellent strategic point within Edo Castle.         The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.           This may be the Kosurugi Shinto Shrine at Kosurugi Point. It is the guardian of Koshigoe village. The old name was Hachioji gu, and Sasaki Moritsuna organized a campaign to raise funds for building the shrine.             This torii does not stand at present, only a monument next to a petrol station. But it was probably famous during the Meiji era, and many photos remain of this scene. A procession of mountain palanquins and umbrellas is seen, some of the people looking like soldiers.               This is Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond) located at the southeast of Chumon Gate of Todaiji Temple. Since Mt. Wakakusa is visible afar, this is the view from the Nanboku (lit. South-North) approach to the temple when facing southeast. The stairs at west of Nakashima Island and a torii gate are present. The castle was studded with watchtowers, such as Inui Yagura, Fushimi Yagura and the No.1 through No.7 corner watchtowers. However, only No. 6 and No. 1 exist today.                     Labeled L17 HACHIMAN(B), the photograph depicts the Jogu Romon (upper shrine gate). The tablet on the gate reads Hachiman-gu.
