        The building on the right is Ogiya Restaurant. A garden is on the left side of Otonashi River. According to the restaurant brochure, the history of the establishment goes back to 1648 when Yazaemon started a simple tea stand on the street. That was the time of the 3rd Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Hayafune Takehiko is currently the 14th generation owner. The modern building is a five-story concrete structure, with Ogiya Restaurant on the second floor. The gates still remain at the first floor entrance. The woman holding the younger brother on her knees is probably the mother and the woman on the right her mother-in-law. A woven bamboo basket containing rice cakes or perhaps chimaki dumplings is nearby.               This is a teahouse in front of Otenmon Gate at Heian Shrine. Lanterns hang near the wisteria trellis. People are relaxing under the wisteria blossoms. A woman holding a parasol on a rickshaw is visible on the right, as well as Daigokuden Hall beyond the gate. The shrine was built in 1895. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G. The Seiyoken Annex sign is gone, and the cherry trees have grown. Shades are hanging from the eaves of the teahouse on the left, and its name, Insho-tei is written thereon. On the right, the Great Buddha still has its halo.                   The residences of feudal lords were formerly located here as protection on the west side of Edo Castle. However, the area was converted to a garden after the great fire of the Meireki Period in 1657. The garden was designed in exact detail, right down to the location of each stone and tree. There were apparently two waterfalls in the garden, one at the southern edge of Oike (Great Pond) in the centre of the garden and the other near Takimi Teahouse.
