Wakakusa Yamayaki in Nara

NARA, Japan - The grass of the hillside of Mt. Wakakusa in the city of Nara is burning during an annual festival on Jan. 25, 2014, as fireworks preceded it. The Wakakusa Yamayaki festival is held on the fourth Saturday in January every year and has been taking place for hundreds of years. At front is the five-story pagoda of Kofukuji, a Buddhist temple. NARA, Japan - Some 240 monks and lay Buddhist followers dust the Great Buddha statue at Todaiji Temple in Nara, on Aug. 7. The bronze statue, completed in 752, is dusted once a year. According to legend, those who get dust from the Great Buddha will be able to avoid misfortune in the next year.

Daibutsu (the Great Buddha) of Kamakura

The bronze lanterns on both sides of the statue were donated in January 1712 and still exist today. Behind them are the two stones presumed to be foundations of the former Great Buddha building. Daibutsu (the Great Buddha) of Kamakura

The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a seated Amitabha Buddha (Amida Nyorai) made of bronze. Designated as a National Treasure in 1897, it is the main object of worship at Kohtokuin Shojosenji Temple. Historic documents state that work began on a gilt statue of Shaka Nyorai Buddha about 13.5 meters in height in the year 1252. It is not known when it became a statue of Amida Buddha. The Hundred Stone Statues of Jizo at Ganmangahara,Nikko

Nikko Kanmangafuchi is a deep gorge created by the erosion of the lava of Mt. Nantai by the rough flow of Daiya River. Hundred Jizo (guardian deity of children) stand at this site. Most of the Jizo are intact, and the main Jizo faces the front as portrayed in the photo. Rokudo jizo,stone statue of the guardian deity

The Rokudo Jizo are typical examples of stone Buddhist statues in Hakone together with the Magai botoke of Nijugobosatsu. It was carved on a rock facing Shojin Lake at the foot of the Mt. Kamifutagoyama, and has a height of over 4 meters. It was completed in 1300, and the Buddhist ceremony to consecrate a newly made image was conducted by Ryokan Boninjo.
