A photo of a person wearing a hanten and standing backwards on the cedar boulevard by the shores of Lake Ashino. From the telegraph pole, we know this picture was taken after 1881 when telegraphy started around Lake Ashino. The building to the left is the so-called Honjin of the Hakonejuku.                     The garden contains various trees, and lanterns and landscaping stones decorate the garden on the slope. The hotel entrance has a karahafu style roof. Inoue Mankichi Inoue of Nagasaki Prefecture bought a sub-temple called Yaami from Anyoji Temple at Maruyama in 1879, then renovated it in Western style and opened it as the Yaami Hotel. Many foreigners stayed here, but the building burned down in 1906.                       This is the post town of Hakone viewed from Mishima-cho when facing Odawara-cho. Since the telegraph pole placed between Tokyo and Nagasaki in 1873 is visible, and the Hakone Imperial Villa at Dogashima by Lake Ashinoko in 1886 cannot be seen, this photo is assumed to have been taken between those periods.
