Funa Bridge over Chikuma River at Nakasendo Shionada Inns

A bridge connecting the Shionata juku and the kaido, located along the Nakasendo to the right bank of the Chikuma River. It was the responsibility of this juku to take care of this bridge and secure transport. The bridge was destroyed many times by the steep flow of the Chikuma River.         View of Nihonbashi River looking west, taken from Nihonbashi Bridge. The river is busy with cargo boats. Mt. Fuji was visible from this spot on clear days. The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods.           Medaki waterfall at Nunobiki Falls, taken around the same time as photographs #2814 and 2827 (Medaki Waterfall of Nunobiki). The presence of the wooden bridge over the river and the teahouse and the absence of a water supply pump suggest that this was taken on the mid-Meiji Period.               The bank of Katsura River, which separated the feudal domains of Sagami and Kai along the old Koshu Highway (present-day Uenohara-machi in southeastern Yamanashi Prefecture), seen from the east side (Sagami side) of the river. The buildings are teahouses standing along the highway, the existence of which is reported in travel journals as early as the Tenpo Period (1830-44). The mountain station Suwa-no-Sekisho (Kuchidome Bansho) is up the slope on the right. Mt.
