Hiunkaku at Nishi-Honganji Temple

The northwestern part of Hiunkaku at Nishihonganji Temple is viewed from the north side of the pond in Tekisui Garden. Hiunkaku is said to be a part of a mansion built in the Momoyama Period. It is a three-story, cypress-shingle roofed, palace-style building. The north and south sides are about 25.8m long, the east side about 11.8m and the west side about 12.5m.       The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide.                 Taishi-do of Higashihonganji Temple is viewed from the southeast. There are many children around the big water fountain. The Taishi-do took 15 years to build. It was completed in 1895 according to the wishes of the head priest, Otani Kosho. Built in single-story irimoya style with a tiled roof, it is 76m wide, 56m deep, 38m high, and covers 3,800 square metres.                   The building on the right is Ogiya Restaurant. A garden is on the left side of Otonashi River. According to the restaurant brochure, the history of the establishment goes back to 1648 when Yazaemon started a simple tea stand on the street. That was the time of the 3rd Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Hayafune Takehiko is currently the 14th generation owner. The modern building is a five-story concrete structure, with Ogiya Restaurant on the second floor. The gates still remain at the first floor entrance.                     The Golden Pavilion at Rokuon-ji Temple seen from the eastern edge of Kyoko Pond, facing west-northwest. The rock on the left is Hosokawa-ishi, and Ashihara Island is visible behind. The temple was built in 1398 but destroyed by arson in 1950. Unlike the reconstructed building of today, the original roof was supported by many columns at each level. Water weeds fill the surface of the pond. Pine forest surrounds the area.                       This is Shichishoen at Mukojima, the villa of the Hotta family, former feudal lords of the Sakura Clan. The villa was owned by the family from 1868 to 1887. Of kaiyushiki (garden with a pond and promenade style), the garden was watered by the Sumida River and changed according to the tides. It was referred to as one of the best gardens in Tokyo.
