Seeing cherry blossoms in the Imperial Park

Five-story pagoda at Hokanji Temple

The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide. Cherry trees at Shiba Park

The front gate of Zojoji Temple at Shiba is visible on the far left. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit. The Yomeimon Gate,Toshogu Shrine,Nikko

This is the front of Yomeimon. The symbol of Nikko Toshogu, this gate displays craftsmanship and decorative techniques representative of the early Edo Period. The carvings on the gate total 508 in number and include people, animals (real and imaginary), flowers, birds, and patterns. The Land-boat Pine Tree,Kinkakuji Temple

It is said that this pine was planted by Yoshimitsu Ashikaga. The branches were formed to look like a boat. On the left is the ohjoin (large study), and the roof of the kuri is visible on the right. Higashi Honganji Temple

Taishi-do of Higashihonganji Temple is viewed from the southeast. There are many children around the big water fountain. The Taishi-do took 15 years to build. It was completed in 1895 according to the wishes of the head priest, Otani Kosho. Built in single-story irimoya style with a tiled roof, it is 76m wide, 56m deep, 38m high, and covers 3,800 square metres. Buddhist statues on the Sanmon Gate of Chion-in Temple. The Buddha is seated in the middle, flanked by Zenzai-doji, Shudatsu-choja, and the 16 Buddhist Saints. Unryu (dragons in clouds) and other motifs are painted on the ceiling. This is the largest gate of its kind in Japan, with five bays and three entrances. The stage of Kiyomizudera Temple,Kyoto

Balcony of the main hall of Kiyomizu Temple seen from Okuno-in, facing west-northwest. Among the sightseers there are women with parasols. It is probably the beginning of summer because the trees are lush with leaves. The terrace was renovated in 1633. The building is in the yosemune style, and the roof is made entirely of hinoki tree bark. Wings flank the west side and the east and west of the south side. The Kyoto Imperial Palace

Northern view of Oike Pond Garden and Otsune Palace from Keyaki Bridge, looking over Nakashima Island in the Garden. The stone bridge on the right leads to the northern island. Pines and firs grow in front of the palace. Oike Garden was built during the Enpo Period (1673-81). This type of garden, called kaiyushiki, had bridges, lanterns, and small pavilions to enhance enjoyment of the beauty of the garden. Otsune Palace is built in the shoin-zukuri style and was rebuilt in 1855.
