The Golden Pavilion at Rokuon-ji Temple seen from the western edge of Kyoko Pond, facing northeast. Akamatsu-ishi (rock) is visible in the left foreground and Ashihara Island to the far right. The temple was built in 1398 but destroyed by arson in 1950.     The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide.           This is a magnificient view of the famous Zaimoku Island, an interesting geological arch formed by erosion. The layered sedimentary rock of this island teaches us much about the origins of Matsushima Bay. Unfortunately, the arch was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1969.                     Taishi-do of Higashihonganji Temple is viewed from the southeast. There are many children around the big water fountain. The Taishi-do took 15 years to build. It was completed in 1895 according to the wishes of the head priest, Otani Kosho. Built in single-story irimoya style with a tiled roof, it is 76m wide, 56m deep, 38m high, and covers 3,800 square metres.                       A yakata boat negotiates the Hozu River rapids. This was taken from a rock on the south side of the river. People took the approximately 16km boat ride from Hozu Town in Kameoka to Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama.
